Tips to Avoid Getting Lost During a Hiking Trip

Hiking in Group

Hiking trip is an exciting adventure. It allows you to explore nature and also enjoy the lovely sites. It can also be an educational trip as you learn something new by walking around. Most of all, you will stay fit even while you are traveling.

The only problem is that if it is your first time on a specific area, there is a good chance that you will get lost. This is true especially if the hiking area is too dense. The place could be confusing and you can’t find your way out. There are things you can do so you won’t get lost during the hiking trip.

Ask for a permission

Usually, hiking sites need permits for you to explore the area. Before you are given permission, you will go through a pre-hike training. You will be oriented about the place. You will also be given information on who to call in case of an emergency. It is always good to have someone who knows the area to come and rescue you in just a phone call if you get lost.

Bring the right gear

Digital maps are becoming very popular these days. They are convenient to use. They are easy to understand too. The only problem is when you are hiking, you might visit places without internet access at all. Therefore, bringing traditional maps and compass would still be helpful. You will be guided back to where you came from once you use these gears. Flashlights and other basic items should also be with you in the event of an emergency.

Take photos

You should take photos of the areas you have passed by just so you will know if you are on the right direction. If not, you can use the photos to get back to your point of origin as you can see signs and landmarks.

Retrace your steps

This is the most basic advice you will get if you are already lost. Just find your way back by following your footsteps. It is still tough, but at least you have a clue on how to get back. Also, the goal is to start walking back and not move forward. Don’t continue walking further as you would get even more lost.

Be observant

While walking, don’t just speak with the people who are with you. Try to stay quiet and focus on your surroundings. This helps you so that it would be easier to find your way out. If you are with a group, you can combine the information you have based on your observation with the others so it would be easier for you to get back.

Be prepared to stay overnight

Just in case you really got lost and no one was there to rescue you, find a place to stay. You should be prepared to create a makeshift shelter. You should not keep searching when it is already too late. Continue finding your way back in the morning. It is a lot easier and safer.

Hopefully, you won’t ever get lost while hiking. It should be a fun activity for you and your friends.
